Balance between school performance and athletic performance can be a very stressful and hectic problem when it comes to high school. You have to focus on both sides rather than just one.

John Mulder, a senior at the D. C Everest Senior High, faces with this common predicament everyday as he balances both his academic and athletic life to make his last year as a high schooler the best it can be.

Mulder said that this cross-country season was a pretty good one. The team had a lot of improvements from last year and they “made it pretty far as a team,” as they went through multiple meets.

He said that he made some personal improvements of his own for his performance this season. “Just the little stuff like diet, flexibility, and hydration come together to make a difference,” said Mulder.

He said that balancing both his academic and athletic life is not easy. Mulder said cross-country meets are on weekends, and occasionally on Thursday nights. When other students have the whole weekend to study for upcoming tests that week, cross-country students have to find a plan on how to study besides going to meets.

“As long as you stay on top and get your homework done, you gotta keep school coming first,” said Mulder. “You gotta take it one step at a time. To be honest, I will tilt more towards the sports side, since we have a whole school year,” said Mulder. “So if something happens I can always get my grade up.”

Mulder said that with this cross-country year being his last, he wanted to make the best of it by putting all of his effort into his sports, but still making time for this school assignments.
