The Screen Actors Guild Awards are presented by the Screen Actors Guild‐American Federation of Television and Radio Artists in recognition of outstanding performances in film and primetime television. Often, the nominees and recipients of these awards are helpful and accurate to predict who the Oscar nominations

Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series: This Is Us has nominations spread across the board, but personally I think that this award may be the easiest for them to pick up. Considering the cast won the award in 2018, but have continued to be praised for their performances, I believe winning this award for the second year in a row will be no challenge.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series: This Is Us was one of the most highly anticipated television series releases in modern television. Sterling K. Brown has been in the media recently for phenomenal acting and dramatic scenes, and because of this I think he will go home this year at least a third award to put on the shelf.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series:  While all of the women in this category are phenomenal and deserving, Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) have the best chance at winning the SAG Award this year. Oh’s recent Golden Globe for the same category and Moss’ two previous SAG Awards and eleven nominees make her much overdue for a victory.

Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture:  The highly anticipated movie Black Panther debuted in Feb. 2018, and behind the film was a highly diverse cast, including minorities, was well received among theaters. Black Panther’s cast changed the standards that the general public held for Hollywood, and because of this, I would not be surprised if they took home the award.

Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role: Despite close race between Actresses Glenn Close (The Wife), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), and Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born), It is most likely that the SAG Award will either go to Close or Gaga, seeing as at the Critic’s Choice gave Close the Award for Best Actress, tying up the lead between the two this award season.

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role: His recent win, Rami Malek took home a Golden Globe for Actor in a Drama for his performance in Bohemian Rhapsody. Based on the box office success and stellar reviews, I believe that Malek will take home the award Jan. 27.

The Grammy Awards are one of the most highly anticipated award shows of each year, and set the stage for the upcoming music trends. Here are my predictions of the winners for a few selected categories.

Record of the year: The record of the year category is the category that represents mainstream music and how it has influenced the general public. Past year winners include Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic” and Adele’s “Hello”, and following the trend some of the biggest songs this year are nominated. While some songs like “This Is America” (Childish Gambino) provided insightful commentary, but based on the sheer popularity, I believe Drake’s song “God’s Plan” will take home the 61st Grammy this year.

Album of the year: Album of the year is the music equivalent of getting a Best Picture award, and this year the nominees are heavily dominated by rap, hip-hop, and r&b artists. Due to the overwhelming popularity rise in this music genre this year, it is hard to pinpoint who will take home the Grammy, but the odds are in favor of Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy, Drake’s Scorpion and Post Malone’s Beerbongs and Bentleys.

Best New Artist: Each year the winner for the Best New Artist is given a significant advantage in their career; this title has the potential to launch them into stardom. Dua Lipa has dominated the mainstream pop radio with hits like “New Rules”, “IDGAF”, and “One Kiss”, she has gathered a large following and made herself a shoe in for this year’s recipient for Best New Artist.

Best Alternative Music album: After a nearly four-year hiatus, the band Arctic Monkeys returned with their new album Tranquilty Base Hotel & Casino and absolutely topped all the Alternative music charts and the band’s fanbase rekindled the popularity that once followed the British Alternative group. Based on their time on the charts and frequency they were streamed, it would be no surprise to see Arctic Monkeys pull together their first Grammy.

Best Rap Song: 2018 was the year that the rap genre poured into popular music stations. Drake’s hit “God’s Plan” spent at least eleven weeks after its release at the number one spot. The enormous popularity and success that followed this song is why I predict “God’s Plan” will be winning the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Rap Song.

Song of the year: Lady Gaga broke boundaries this year with her leading role in the box office smash A Star Is Born with a soundtrack streaming across hundreds of platforms. The song off the soundtrack “Shallow” has been receiving nominations in not only music award shows, but also cinematic award shows, and has already received a Golden Globe. My best guess is that “Shallow” will take home not only the Grammy, but the respect of all those to witness it winning.
