From their respective beginnings, the NFL, NCAA, MLB, and the NBA, have relied upon fan attendance to stay afloat.

Fans like Cameron Pflanzer, senior, juniors Kasaundra Fellner, and Jacob Brodhagen, are the reason the NFL made a yearly revenue of 7.24 billion dollars in 2015.

Fellner said that she and her family collect sports memorabilia because it is something they enjoy doing.

“The main reason I collect is built around my stepdad. He is obsessed with sports and certain teams and so we as a family grew up collecting sports memorabilia. When we collect, we also remember good times we’ve had with each other.”

Fellner said that she collects a slew of different sports and team apparel.

“We collect a multitude of football helmets, fatheads, bobbleheads, furniture, you name it,” Fellner remarked. “We have specific sections dedicated to certain teams. Those sections include the Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, Wisconsin Badgers football and basketball, the Green Bay Packers, Denver Broncos, and my favorite, the Milwaukee Bucks,” Fellner said. “We even have a car we call the “Bucks mobile” that is completely decked out with Bucks decor from the license plate number to the floor mats.”

For Fellner, there is no question whether or not she will continue to collect.

“We will most definitely keep building our memorabilia. It’s a part of how we make memories and spend time with each other,” she said.

Pflanzer said that his stepfather collects jerseys and canvas signings, including a Brett Favre jersey and a canvas of Clay Matthews sacking Brett Favre, signed by Matthews himself.

He said that his most valued piece of memorabilia is his signed J.J. Watt jersey.

Pflanzer believes that he will continue to collect memorabilia for as long as he can afford to.

Junior Jacob Brodhagen is a very passionate Green Bay Packers, Wisconsin Badgers, and Milwaukee Bucks fan, who said that he has a Green Bay Packer-themed bedroom and a Wisconsin Badgers-themed man cave.

He noted that he collects the materials because they are cool and enjoyable. His collection includes autographs from Wisconsin Badger basketball players, and similarly to Planzer, a J.J. Watt autograph, along with jerseys.

He attends two Milwaukee Bucks games and two Wisconsin Badger football games a year, as well.

Brodhagen’s parents also collect sports memorabilia, which they add to the Badger-themed man cave. Brodhagen also said that he has an uncle who is a sports junkie who collects autographs from close to any athlete.

“I have an uncle that has 600 plus autographs. He has an autograph from pretty much anybody. If you say a name, he probably has their autograph,” Brodhagen said. “He has close to any Badger player ever and a lot of big-name players around.”

He gets the autographs by simply sending a note in the mail asking for their autograph, according to Brodhagen.

Fans like Fellner, Pflanzer, and Brodhagen show the extremes fans will take to keep sports leagues thriving.

Only time will tell what is in store for venerable leagues like the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NCAA, but as long as devoted fans give their time, they will have nothing to fret about.
