Where’s Waldo? Although you may not be sporting the red cap and striped sweater, it is no obstacle for your Snapchat friends to locate you.

Snapchat has recently added a new feature to their app. On June 21, 2017, Snapchat launched Snap Maps which allows the friends you have on the app to see where you were the last time you logged onto Snapchat. You can view a map of the world and find your friends. You can also add a snap to ‘Our Story’ which could end up appearing on the map. You are able to opt out of this feature and choose which friends you share your location with, or go on ‘ghost mode’ which means you can still view where your friends are, however your friends cannot see you.

Snapchat’s new addition has caused controversy among Snapchat users. Some say that Snap Map is an invasion of privacy, while others think it could be beneficial.

“Privacy has been an issue regarding Snap Maps so it is nice that Snapchat added the ghost mode feature for people who want to be more secure,” said Megan Burgoyne, Junior. “If someone does not choose to be on ghost mode, it might be safer to make sure you only have your friends and family on Snapchat so you won’t have to worry.”

If your settings are not set to ghost mode or if you have not personally enabled select friends, any one of your friends on Snapchat can see your current location.

“I think it is fun to see where you and your friends are, but I also think it could be dangerous because the wrong person could see where you are,” said Morgan Kohn, Junior.

Since the launch of the new feature, Snap Maps has been continuously making headlines as ‘creepy’ and ‘dangerous.’

“I think it is kind of creepy. I do not think there is any reason people need to know where you are all the time,” said Kohn.

In this generation, technology has advanced drastically.

“It is the generation of technology. The younger generation puts enough of their business out there, why continue to do the other things to put yourself at risk,” said D.C. Everest Police Liaison Officer Frank Wierzbanowski.

The advancement in technology can lead to cool experiences and opportunities, which was Snapchat’s goal with adding the Snap Map feature.

“We have built a whole new way to explore the world! See what’s happening, find your friends, and get inspired to go on an adventure,” wrote Team Snap on snap.com.

Snapchat said they want the feature to encourage you to meet up with your friends rather than watching each others lives on your phone, and they are hoping to enhance the connections between people and their close friends.

The Snapchat addition not only lets you view where others are, but it also allows you to watch stories of events going on all over the world.

“I don’t use it to let people see where I am, I’m on ghost mode, but I do use it to see the events going on,” said Junior Makala Gunderson.

On Snap Map you can see Snaps of celebrations, sporting events, breaking news and much more from anywhere in the world.

“The Snap Map feature, to me, is pretty interesting because you are able to get a closer look into different places through the ‘Our Story’ feature,” said Burgoyne.

To ensure users that their safety is a top priority, Snapchat made additions to the Snap Map element to fit its versatile community.
